Artist Profile

Barbara Boyce

Mediums: Acrylic, Encaustic, Oil, Painting

Barbara’s art is inspired by nature and its bounty. In her chicken portraits, still lives and landscapes, she tries to place the viewer in the scene she interprets. In her human portraits, usually done in natural settings, she tries to draw the viewer into empathetically experiencing the person portrayed.

A North Dakota native, Barbara has lived in rural southeastern Michigan since the 70s, raising a family with her husband. She earned a B.A. in art and later an M.A.E. and an M.A. TESOL, teaching art and ESL for 36 years in both private and public institutions. Like most art teachers, she has worked in all media at one time or other, but currently concentrates on oil, encaustic and acrylic painting.

Embracing retirement, Barbara pursues art making in earnest, pausing only to travel, socialize and garden. In the last six years, she has exhibited in juried shows in Michigan and other states, won several awards, including two Best of Show and also participates in the AAWA non-juried venues.
Juried venues include Todd Gallery at Middle Tennessee State University; Kreft Gallery, Concordia College; Alfred Berkowitz Gallery, UM Dearborn; Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Center, Scarab Club, Lowell Art Center, Gallery 50, Traverse City; Ann Arbor Art Center.
