Artist Profile

Barbara Carson

Mediums: Sculpture, Mixed Media/Collage, Ceramics/Pottery, Assemblage

My sculpture is a process of discovery and recovery. Beginning with unearthing a face or figure lost in wet clay. Sometimes connecting it to a reclaimed object linked to a memory, message or story.

The work explores issues and themes linked to my journey from creative child to occupational therapist then back to creative child. I frequently incorporate religious and ethnic themes that are both personal and universal.

Barbara’s sculpture has been in both group and invitational exhibits in New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, and Ann Arbor. Her work is in private collections throughout the United States and Ukraine.

Growing up to immigrant parents in Southwest Detroit provided an environment requiring imagination and improvisation. She was forever mining the everyday treasures not covered in cement and asphalt.
As a child her first sculpture was a composition head for a puppet. Made with sawdust coming from the floor of the tool and dye factory where her father worked.

Inspired by a quote from sculptor John Rood “The value of art to us should be that it is the greatest key we have to the understanding of one another". Barbara continues to create new work.
